It's a near-certainly that "Dark Knight" won't be the final installment in Nolan's series. Here's a look at which villains in Batman's roster would fit Nolan's un-whimsical vision - and which wouldn't.

Can you see The Penguin or The Riddler in Christopher Nolan's dark world? Who do you think would make the best villain for the next film?

hey there, i never answer these questions on here, don't know if your even supposed to. but i have the best idea for the riddler and i just wanted to share it with someone. OK, so imagine this. (going with the whole theme how the villans are more "real" looking) i see the riddler as a sort of skid row type character. maybe a crazy meth addict that shakes and mutters obsenities. and who do i envision as playing this role? steve buscemi. take it in. embelish this idea in your thoughts. its a good one. hes perfect for the role. way better than jim carey in tights.
Riddiler, Penquin, and Scarecrow, Mister Freeze, Mad Hatter would be the right choices.
those were his worse enemies, beside the Joker. Two Face wasnt that big of a deal for batman.
Cat Woman would be like a love movie, make it all mushy and no action.
So keep the Ladies out of the picture for a while.
I don't know how any self-respecting Batman fan can give an answer to this writers' question!
Whoever wrote this story clearly cares more about making himself laugh than who the actual, plausible villains could be anyway.
Granted this is all being written in good fun, but still... what journalist can't do at least a LITTLE research first? i mean... even the garbage sources of WIKIPEDIA would have given you more realistic contenders to work with than ' Bat-mite,' 'Penny Plunderer,' and 'Chandell' !
I'm Surprised the story didn't end with a suggestion that Mr. Nolan resurrect
Vincent Price so he could Reprise his role as the Terrifying 'Egg Head.' Honestly!
You mention Chandell and leave glaring omissions like Bane. Who took Batman out of commission so long that Bruce had to be replaced by another.
By far, Bane is the biggest omission. In Nolan's Gotham, based in reality, Bane's character could work as well as the Riddler. Just look at professional sports, its the steroid era, so Bane is very plausible. Plus it gives Batman another very intelligent villain, such as the Joker, or the Riddler.
Knightfall was one of my favortie stories growing up.
I am glad to see people throwing Bane in here, and not to forget he also discovered who Batman is, showing that he is also an intellectually worthy adversary.
The Riddler no question ive been looking up info on him and ive been writing a script for Christopher Nolan but im only 18 so i dont know if it is good it would of course also involve Harly Quinn having flashbacks about the joker which eventually turns her into you guessed it HarleyQuin that is just the beginning
I haven't heard one mention of a Batman villian as old and believable as the Joker in a Nolan film as Dr. Hugo Strange .
I'm thinking a young Dr. Hugo Strange played by Johnny Depp or an older version by Anthony Hopkins .
The opening picture's caption is incorrect. Tommy Lee Jones did play Harvey Dent in Batman Forever, but Tim Burton did not direct that film. Harvey Dent was played by Billie Dee Williams in Burton's Batman Returns, however.
Joel Shumacher directed Batman Forever. Billie Dee Williams played Harvey Dent in Burton's first Batman film.
Are you kidding me? What about Bane? I realize he was HORRIBLY portrayed in Batman and Robin but in the comics, he was the only one who ever broke Batman...literally. Very realistic, plausible, and a PHYSICAL threat to Batman even if he's never faced one yet.
What's great about Batman is the realistic undertones that lie in the story.
And if they REALLY want to get out there, introduce a ton of potential villains, and take things in a different direction...why not pick up the earthquake story line in Cataclysm? They talk about how the Joker cuts across the storyline in The Dark Knight. The possibilities of villains and even heroes popping in and out in a realistic, yet drama filled manner with Cataclysm are nearly endless.

A-Men!! Bane is the ticket, Cataclysm could be an amazing story line, and I think Talia would be a better option than Catwoman. I always liked their storyline and see far more potential than a jewel thief.
Thank you! After the Dark Night Returns, Knightfall is one of my favorite story lines.
I'm surprised the author alluded to a relatively new story line with Batman and Talia having a son, and didn't mention a new Batman villain, Hush, who knows Batman's identity. Also a villain that would use psychology to fight Batman much like Batman uses it against thugs.
I did not trust anything this article had to say after reading the picture's caption. I am not a huge Batman fan, but checking your facts is common sense to me.
I already said that on io9. Bring in The Riddler, but make him like the zodiac killer (a real life riddler, people) from the late sixties and then multiply by a hundred. Instead of killing one victim at a time, make him murder by numbers instead.
Man, the real zodiac killer was never caught!
I really think to take the Dark Knight to a new level and get away from the comic books and tv series. I think we need to bring in a whole new set of villians. How about a a taliban villian that wants to destroy the world let alone setting a bomb and traps to batman and gotham city.
We can even make a Bush like charicter. A lost president that goes evil and is trying to take control in a nazi like regim. Batman and a host of other superheroes ( I.E. The Superfriends) to save the day.
Last We always have the Bizzaro World. No one has yet futured into this area of the superhero area.
Make it a one on one battle of wits and stregnth.

No, if we make new villains for these movies, it will go down hill. Sticking to the source material is key. Batman has the best rogues gallery of any hero in any media, let's use them and use them well.

Omg, how can we leave out Mr. Freeze and finally cast the right person Patrick Stewart, the whole story line rocked in the comics...and the toons...I just feel that the movie version is so screwed up that we will never get to see Jean Luc Picard/ Mr. Xavier fullfill another roll that is perfect for him.
I wanted Laurence Fishburne (spelling?) / Morpheus from The Matrix to play him.

They aren't going to bring back Mr freeze for the next one, even though that would be cool it would be out of order and might ruin the story line
newsvine got rid of the URL in the post, check film school rejects for their dark knight giveaway.
What about the Mad Hatter!?
I actually think the Mad Hatter would be great. Not as a child molester, that would be too easy for Batman. I thought a young, reckless sociopath who has an intense hatred for authority and order. Does anyone know what actor could pull that off?
I think the MAd HAtter re-invisioned as a child molester....Steve Buscemi would be perfect!

ooohhh yeah. mad hatter, i forgot about him. Now there I can see Steve Buscemi, even tho serendipitous posted he'd like to see Steve as the Riddler on meth.
I wonder, though, if they're gonna leave the Joker character alone now that Heath has died after such a perfect portrayal.
I don't like Aaron Eckhart as Two-Face, but I admit i've only seen the trailers and will reserve final judgement until then i can see the movie.
Hush would be a great story to explorer next. the problem being there are just SO many, characters used in that story, it would be hard to transfer that to a movie.
I would like to see Harley Quinn, but with Heath gone, it might be hard to work in that character. My pick for Harley Quinn is, but not limited to: Courtney Love. if she could just be less skanky.
I wouldn't mind seeing Jim Carey reprise Riddler, but don't let Tim Burton near it! After that twisted, dark performance in The Number 23, maybe Chris Nolan can create a better version if Riddler than the last eye sore. Eventho I laffed alot when Riddler said, "Hey, Two-Face. Show me how to punch a guy!"

they could have jospeh gordon levitt do the joker. i think he'd be pretty good at it! or maybe david tennet.
actually. i though aaron eckhart was pretty good! his face was so amazingly done at the end! i personally though he was good and stuff.
everyone says jim carrey. i think someone who you wouldnt except. like what they did with heath. no one thought he would be good. until you actually saw him! you didnt even reconize him! he was amazing! so for the riddler. some good people might be. jason isaacs! james macavoy! johnny depp. john hannah. alan cumming. those are just a couple of my choices. gordon levitt could do a good job of him too.
and i dont really know alot about batman and stuff. i never got into comic books and all. but if they bring in the penquin. maybe robbin williams. johnny depp. hugo weaving. Jack black. alan cumming. or elijah wood (possibly. he might be able to pull it off he might not.).
for mr freeze. id go with Thomas Kretschmann. hugh dillon. bruce willis. Kiefer Sutherland. viggo mortensen. john lithgow. viggo mortensen.
for lew moxon. James Gandolfini might not be bad!
and for
The Ventriloquist... Jim Broadbent
thats just my opinion. and again. i dont really know too much about batman and stuff.
Personally I like Clay Face. After A Death in the Family (when Joker kills Robin) Clayface turns into Robin and Batman, torn by guilt, nearly has a nervous breakdown. And what was the name of the guy from Batman Year 2? The crimson outfit and skull mask, it was one of the few times Batman took a gun with him... oh yeah! Don't forget Bookworm and Egghead (aka Vincent Price)!
let team Bushemi or Colin Ferrell as the riddler and Gondalfini as the penguin....
I think penguin or riddler would be the best option for the next villian. Lets team Bushemi or Colin Ferrell as the riddler and Galdolfini and the penguin.
How about updating the evil persona like BO as a Manchurian candidate type who is going to turn over the US to an evil sheik who controls him. The evil backers like" CHAOS " would be Move on .org. , and in the end we find out that the evil Mr. BO is only an empty suit and the world is saved. Kindest Regards Joe
How about Obama - he'd make a good one - flip flop flip flop - we can call him the evil Fliperoper!!!!
How can you possibly skip over the Mad Hatter? Irresponsible! Hatter gets a score of A+ for several reasons: The character is complex in that he has lingering mental and health issues that could be a great storyline. He was around for justice league series and best of all there's a secret surprise plot twist that can be played from the presence of his impostor. Can you say equally demented fraternal twin brother? He's a dark and twisted character of intrigue his fascination with mind control screams to be put to film! A true Batman fan would never forget about him!

Here is who I want for what roles. Not all in one movie but over a few.
The Riddler:
First choice, Robin Williams. His character in "One Hour Photo" is very similar to The Riddler before he snaps. A loner, lost in the world without love. Eddie Izzard or Chris Titus could be good too.
Catwoman:
Charlize Theron. She's sexy enough, she's a great actress and can be evil. Her work in monster is great for the complex character that is Catwoman. Angelina Jolie could probably play the part too.
Talia Al Ghul:
Angelina Jolie. She kicks some serious ass. But she'd have to put some muscle back on.
I think Harley Quinn & The Mad Hatter would be great too. Especially if put together, The Mad Hatter starts to think she's Alice.
I love the Clay Face character, it's one of my favorite villains but don't think it'll work that well in this line of story. Bane might but it can't get too out of wack with it. Killer Croc might work. I'd like Vin Diesel to play Killer Croc he's got the size & the voice.

OMG! EDDIE IZZARD not as the riddler (of course, that would work fantasticall too) but AS THE MAD HATTER!
he'd be sooo fantastic! omg! i completly forgot about him! omg! how could I! lmfao.
You forgot Poison Ivy, whom I would give a C+ as a villain - and Uma Thurman still had a career afterwards - Not sure who could do it now - maybe Virginia Madsen.
I honestly can't think of another classic villian that fits the dark psychological realm of Nolan's films. Even Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns," so similar in tone to the Nolan movies, only used the Joker and Two-Face. Riddler might make for an interesting cat-and-mouse movie, but that would completely drag this daring franchise down to a more conventional level.
Catwoman could bring some interesting dynamic to the Bruce/Batman characterization to date, but I can't figure how she'd fit in the overall Gotham mythos that's been developed (crime lord? agent of chaos? I just can't get her to work as the main villian).
I think a cool direction would be the introduction of Robin. WAIT, hear me out... I'm not talking a red-green-yellow suited gee-whiz campy Robin - keep it dark, of course.
We're exploring Bruce's battles with his own soul while saving Gotham's. There's something very interesting there if he were to take on a father figure role; he gets a glimpse of a "normal" life of a human relationship, and it satisfies something he needs, but he also knows he's corrupting a young boy by feeding him the same psychological poison that is destroying him. And Robin can function as a human face to Gotham's soul, which now stares Bruce in the eye and forces him to question if he really is saving the city, or destroying it to feed his own needs.
I think there's a lot of potential there, meself.
